Marlboro Man makes comeback as Liberal Democrats seek smokers’ vote

The Marlboro Man has made his first appearance on an Australian billboard since at least 1992, on a 13-metre billboard on Victoria Road Rydalmere with Liberal Democrats Senator David Leyonhjelm.

This is part of a major campaign for the Liberal Democrats, with posters and promotional material appearing in tobacconist shops around Australia in the lead up to the election. Even though Australian smokers already contribute more than 17 times what they cost taxpayers, both Liberal and Labor plan to raise Australian cigarette prices to around $40 a packet, making them easily the most expensive in the world.

While Senator Leyonhjelm does not endorse smoking, he believes people have a right to make their own choices without being treated like second class citizens.

“Higher tobacco taxes will particularly disadvantage those on low incomes as well as promoting illegal sales. Our promise to smokers is that we will do all in our power to block the mooted tax increases on cigarettes,” he said.
