Disaffected former supporters of the Liberal Party are amongst hundreds of people who have joined the Liberal Democrats in recent weeks, giving the party solid prospects of registering for the election and having a representative elected to the Upper House.
Best known as the party represented federally by Senator David Leyonhjelm, the Liberal Democrats are a classical liberal party that runs on a small government platform, and boasts its representatives will never vote for an increase in taxes or a reduction in freedom.
Hundreds of members have signed up in recent weeks using online campaigns targeting outdoor recreation groups including fishers, shooters, four-wheel drivers, and supporters of other issues championed by the Liberal Democrats such as low taxes, balanced budgets and assisted suicide.
The Liberal Democrats require just a few dozen more members to reach its target for party registration of 500.
