Human Rights Commission accepts Leyonhjelm 18C complaint

September 13, 2016

Liberal Democrats Senator David Leyonhjelm has received notification from the Human Rights Commission that it has accepted his S18C complaint against Fairfax journalist Mark Kenny, and that the case can now move to the conciliation stage.

Senator Leyonhjelm says he is seeking no more than for Mr Kenny to acknowledge that the potentially insulting article he wrote about him, including the description of him as an “angry white male”, is unlawful.

“I don’t need an apology or flowers from Mr Kenny, merely an acknowledgment that the article was unlawful. If Mr Kenny fails to do this, then I will look at my options.”

Senator Leyonhjelm was not offended by the article, but complained to the Commission to highlight the absurdity of 18C. He intends to introduce a Bill to repeal 18C later this week.
