Liberal Democrats Senator David Leyonhjelm is challenging the National Party to demonstrate they learned something from the Orange by-election by speaking up for shooters in the Senate.
Senator Leyonhjelm has agreed to allow an extended debate about his disallowance motion on an import ban on the Adler seven shot lever-action shotgun this afternoon, which will give National Party senators plenty of time to explain their position.
“If the Nats refuse to support my disallowance motion in the Senate today it will demonstrate they have learnt nothing from the Orange by-election,” Senator Leyonhjelm said. “It will indicate they have been intimidated by the hysterical inner-city elites and pants wetting hoplophobes who know nothing about guns or the National Firearms Agreement.
“All I am asking is for the Government to honour the existing National Firearms Agreement and for the Nationals to represent their own constituency. The five shot Adler is available to firearms licence holders while replacement magazines can be attached that allow them to hold seven rounds, all legal under state laws. The import ban is farcical and achieves nothing.”
Senator Leyonhjelm says he has taken a stand on this issue because the parliament is full of people who would ban everything if they had half a chance.
“The rights of law abiding shooters are like a salami – if we allow the government to remove slices of it, before we know it, we will have no rights left at all.”
