Leyonhjelm condemns major parties’ Orwellian “Newspeak”
Liberal Democrats Senator David Leyonhjelm has condemned both the Government and Opposition for misleading people with their language about tax increases.
Senator Leyonhjelm points to the recently leaked television advertisements relating to the upcoming budget.
“The advertisements reveal the government is planning to take billions of dollars from Australians by raising taxes and taking money from people’s superannuation. The use of the words ‘growing the economy’ and ‘reform’ when referring to these is Orwellian Newspeak,” Senator Leyonhjelm said.
“They are also fond of using the term ‘savings’ to refer to tax increases. If I were to tell Malcolm Turnbull or Bill Shorten I was saving them money by taking money from their wallet, they would have a right to feel they had been swindled. Australian taxpayers and superannuants feel exactly the same way.”
“Taking money from people is neither creating savings nor growing the economy. Ned Kelly was not a famous reformist.”
“To add insult to injury, taxpayers will be forced to pay for Big Brother’s messages.”
“If the Government has an ounce of credibility, they have two choices. They can change the advertisements to reflect the truth; but better still, they can face up to their spending problem and get their hands out of our pockets.”
